An architect by profession with a deep passion for heritage, Sujatha Shankar has directed two documentary films on Madras and designed a heritage map of the city.
She graduated with a B.Arch from Madras University and an M.Arch from University of Minnesota.
In her practice spanning four decades since the 1980s, she has been handling projects in Architecture, Planning and Interior Design of diverse typologies and scales. She won a prestigious national award for excellence in design. The book ‘Women Architects and Modernism in India’ by Madhavi Desai, includes Sujatha among 28 contemporary practices in the country.
In her multidimensional career path, she was a correspondent for ‘Architecture +Design’, external faculty of several colleges of architecture, Member, Board of Studies at Anna University. She has been written about in publications including ‘India Today’ and ‘Construction World’.
Straddling both the worlds of architecture and heritage, she has served as Vice Chairman of the Indian Institute of Architects, Chennai Centre, on the executive committee of the Tamil Nadu Chapter and on the Heritage Conservation Committee constituted by the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority.
Currently, she is a member of the Governing Council and Executive Committee of INTACH (Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage) and Convenor, INTACH, Chennai Chapter.
